Gregory L. Williams is a co-founder and member of Block Markus & Williams LLC and supervises the Cheyenne, Wyoming, office for the firm. He has specialized in the representation of creditor committees, bankruptcy trustees, financial institutions, and other private and institutional lenders on a local and regional basis since 1974.
Prior to founding Block Markus & Williams LLC, Greg was a partner in a large, Denver-based regional law firm where he acted as the Chair of its Bankruptcy and Financial Institutions Practice Groups. Before entering private practice, Greg served as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Colorado and law clerk for the Chief Judge of the Colorado Court of Appeals.
Greg's practice focuses on business bankruptcies, loan workouts and restructurings, creditors' rights and commercial litigation, and the defense of financial institutions in federal, state, and bankruptcy courts. A substantial portion of his practice is devoted to counseling financial institutions on a broad spectrum of creditors' rights issues, including the avoidance of and response to lender liability claims. In addition, Greg represents both liquidating and Chapter 11 trustees (including the Trustees in MiniScribe Corporation and In re: Albrecht, the largest asset Chapter 11 to have been filed in Wyoming) and unsecured creditor committees, including Convergent Communications, Inc.
One of only a few seasoned litigators who also provide transactional services, Greg brings a career of courtroom experience to the drafting and structuring of secured loans. His transactional experience includes the negotiation and documentation of major real estate and commercial acquisition, development, and construction loans, counsel for lead lenders in syndicated and participated credit facilities and agricultural loans, and the documentation of credit facilities for low-income housing projects.
Greg represents many national lenders, including CoBank, ACB, U.S. Bank, The CIT Group, and Whirlpool Financial Corporation. He also provides legal services to such regional institutions as Centennial Bank of the West, Pinnacle Bancorp, Colorado Business Bank, and Bank of the West, and various independent and community banks on both the Eastern and Western Slopes of Colorado.
Greg is the author of numerous articles and newsletters for the financial institutions and legal communities. In addition, he has lectured extensively to lenders including the Independent Bankers of Colorado and attorneys on various topics involving bankruptcy, real estate, creditors' rights and lender liability law, the Uniform Commercial Code, and the United States Bankruptcy Code.
Greg is the past Chair of the Financial Institutions and Litigation Subsections of the Colorado Bar Association. He also is an active member of the Bankruptcy Subsection of the Denver Bar Association, Commercial Law Subsection and Committee to Revise the Uniform Commercial Code of the Colorado Bar Association, Financial Institutions and Bankruptcy and Insolvency Subcommittees of the American Bar Association, the Financial Institutions Subcommittee of the American Bankruptcy Institute, the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association, and the Turnaround Management Association.
Greg earned his undergraduate degree from Brown University in 1969 and his law degree from the University of Denver College of Law in 1972.
Greg is admitted to the Colorado and Wyoming State Bars, to all Federal and State Courts in Colorado and Wyoming, and to the United States Supreme Court.
